Lesson steps

1. Begin with a piano keyboard showing 2 octaves, 24 notes

This step shows the white and black note names on a piano keyboard so that the note names are familiar for later steps, and to show that the note names start repeating themselves after 12 notes.

The white keys are named using the alphabetic letters C, D, E, F, G, A, B, a pattern that repeats twice.

The group of white and black notes between C and B makes up one octave of notes, 12 notes.

Each white or black key might have a flat(b) or sharp(#) accidental name.

Middle C (midi note 60) is shown with an orange line under the 2nd note on the piano diagram.

The audio files below play every note shown on the piano above, so middle C (marked with an orange line at the bottom) is the 2nd note heard.

2. F-sharp note

This step shows note F-sharp in two different positions on the piano, and describes the note characteristics.

F# is a black key on the piano.

Another name for F# is Gb, which has the same note pitch / sound, which means that the two note names are enharmonic to each other.

The next note up from F# is G.

Or put another way, G is 1 half-tone / semitone higher than F#.

The next note down from F# is F.

Or put another way, F is 1 half-tone / semitone lower than F#.
